'
Skate or Not' was a social networking website for skateboarders launched by Eric Burgess in August 2004. Originally modeled after James Hong and Jim Young's popular
Hot or Not rating site,
Skate or Not became the first rating site for
skateboarders allowing users to rate skateboard photos submitted voluntarily by others. A few months later in the fall of 2004, a more complex version of the site launched allowing users to create a login and interact and comment with other skateboarders from around the world. At the time, it was the first
social networking site of its kind specifically for skateboarders. Burgess has since transitioned it into a more traditional blog noting that shortly after the launch of Skate or Not many other "sites just like it" soon followed, most notably
Salman Agah's Icelounge (launched early in 2005) and
Tony Hawk's Shred or Die, an off shoot of
Will Ferrell's
Funny or Die.
In 2008, Burgess leveraged his success and network he grew from Skate or Not to create the first ever
Skateboard Film Festival, "
doing business as" The International Skateboard Film Festival. The
Skate or Not site remains live today and serves as a partner and affiliate to the annual International Skateboard Film Festival.
